Soulless-sonadow: Chap. 1

Chapter One

My…brother…those were fairly foreign words to Shadow. Mephiles had always asked him to call him "King Mephiles" Or "My lord" or even "My King". Shadow obliged-not wanting to cross the king's authority. Plus-being demoted would be…even more shameful to Shadow. His mother had thought him worthless, at least his brother thought of him occasionally. Though…How DARE he come to Shadow's home without even sending a letter before hand?! Of course, Shadow supposed, Scourge might've been a…'letter' of sorts. Still, Shadow dare not argue, "Oh? My…brother-Mephiles…how long it's been since he's seen me…how long…" Shadow muttered, thinking aloud as he tended to do at times when his mind was uneasy and his thoughts tumbled into endless jumbled up un-thinkable mist that he couldn't make any sense of.

Scourge chuckled, "You're thinking aloud again, my lord." He said finishing folding up the blankets that had once covered the floor. Much to his distaste, though. He hated serving Shadow-I mean LORD Shadow-unfortunately, Mephiles had ordered him to stay with Shadow until he'd…disposed of his pesky younger brother. He couldn't risk getting over thrown by such a…a…nuisance.

Shadow soon asked-after getting dressed in some random clothes he had thrown lazily into a pile at the corner of his room some many days ago-, "Where is my maid, Amy? Surely you didn't get rid of her as well…she is one of us-after all…" Shadow stated plainly.

Scourge growled out the words, "She's in the kitchen-doing whatever it is pink bitches do," Then with that he left Shadow to ponder through his thoughts.

Shadow smiled a bit knowing he still had at least one friend in this big lonely house…though, Amy wasn't really a friend…she was only nice to him because of his status. She was a demon as well, a very low-ranked one, but a demon all the same. Besides-she was one of the only people-or demons-he could talk to…really, talk to.

In truth-after around 49,876 years of living-he was getting lonely. He'd had a mate…or someone he loved-he was going to marry her-but an agency called G.U.N. had her murdered for associating herself with…with…demon scum…and that had broken Shadow…in more ways then one.

Though-he found a way to move on in life, and slowly he clawed his way up the social rankings to become the Lord of the Demons.

With a small smirk of triumph-that came with finally sorting out his, normally jumbled, thoughts-he walked from his room and stepped into the long hallway. In was such a shame, this house was so big…and now the only creatures living in it were Amy, Scourge and Shadow himself. Oh and of course the roaches and pests that crawled on the floor and scrambled up walls like the lowly sickening things they were. Funny-Shadow thought-humans think of us like we think of bugs…

As he walked down the hall, he began to wonder why his brother-the freaking King of Demons-wanted to see him at all…especially after Shadow killed their mother. Though-it was all for good reason…at least in Shadow's mind, it was. He needed to kill her-there was nothing else to it, but…revenge…

"Oh, good morning, Lord Shadow!" A-rather young by demon standards-pink hedgehog said happily. Why did she always seem so happy to see Shadow? There was nothing to be happy about…

"I should say the same to you, Amy. Though-I must warn you ahead of time. My brother-King Mephiles-is coming to visit-Do you mind getting the house in order for his arrival?" Shadow asked, knowing exactly what her response would be even before she said it.

"You can count on me, Lord Shadow!" Amy squealed-in an extremely high pitched voice, which made Shadow's ears hurt-and then darted off to prepare the home for the King's arrival.

Scourge walked into the kitchen and looked at Shadow-whose eyes were following Amy's form as she disappeared into the depths of the large mansion owned by Lord Shadow. "Hm, see? I told you she was still here…" Scourge said simply, starting to tidy up the kitchen-though he hated every minute spent under Shadow's crimson colored glare was an uneasy and anger filled one.

"Hm, yes, you have spoken the truth again, Scourge," Shadow muttered, always seeming to be deep in thought. That was one thing he had that most demons didn't-the ability to think before he acted. You might not think it important, or even "special", but in the demon world…that was a rare trait indeed.

Scourge merely grunted in answer. That was all he needed as a response to his Lord's comment. He knew Lord Shadow didn't trust him, though…he had right not to trust the Kings servant. Shadow had a…rough past with King Mephiles…though neither brother really talked about it, Scourge knew what happened…and it wasn't something either brother should be proud of…in fact, they should be down-right ashamed of their actions. Though, they seemed to have forgotten the fact that to obtain their currect social status they had murdered, raped, killed the innocent, and other horrid things.

        'Though…', Scourge thought with a grin, 'isn't that what makes us all demons? Horrid acts to get what we want…whenever we want it…Ha~ it's funny how people call us cruel when the things we do are things THEY do most all the time…'. With a small-almost evil- chuckles, Scourge managed to escape Shadow's glare of disapproval.

Shadow was now in his study-where many tall dark oak shelves stood against blood red walls with books shoved sloppily into them, courtesy of Shadow's sloppiness- dreading each passing minute-knowing that soon…his brother would arrive…and make his life a living hell again. With a small shudder of surpassed fear, he stood at hearing the clacking and clicking of claws against the marble floors of Shadow's home.

Shadow walked-almost in slow motion-from his desk to the door leading into the elaborate marble hallway…where he was face-to-face with his brother…

'Mephiles…'
